No New Color from Old Hair Color --- or, Can I Save Leftover Hair Color

Had a couple questions lately about the idea of saving hair color once its mixed - or in other words: can i save the "leftovers'' ? !

Now, I completely understand wanting to save hair color, because it's pricey and so many times you end up mixing too much, but that concept absolutely is 100% wrong and please... never ever save opened /mixed hair color (color with developer added), please.

 I have explained this reasoning in one of the many hundreds of Posts written in this Blog . . . but am happy to revisit now (which is why I encourage everyone to read Blog -- Cover to cover) There are a zillion and 1 posts with pearls of wisdom throughout, solving little hair issues, along the way it connects with almost everyone for one reason or another. Courtney who now works here at Killerstrands & has been a Crib Colorist for a couple years, is surprisingly on-point about almost every subject I ask her about. So you too can be like her and have the knowledge that i possess, dropped on your brain - - -  it will help you for a lifetime. I feel most people care about their hair more than their spouse, children or siblings ! I'm kidding of course. . . because when I took a poll once on our men's BLOG (Razerburn- closed now) over 90% of men....... when asked " what physical part of a female do you love the most? Answered : their HAIR ! Can you believe that?

The reason?  :

 is basically rooted in a whole lot of Scientific jargon, but to make it short.........it 100% does NOT work. When coloring hair, you notice that in pro hair color... the tubes themselves are hermetically sealed. Which means it is sealed so tightly absolutely zero oxygen can enter. 

In order to simply pour it to bowl, you must be pretty strong just to roll down the tube, which is why i suggest a tube Key to make life easier and mainly to get every last drop, its important ...Therefore, use a lethal pointed top and poke a hole in it to open up. It is super tightly sealed for a purpose, if it wasn't it would immediately oxidize and be unusable. Even at the brand new stage "out-of-its-shell" it can oxidize, imagine how fast it oxidizes and becomes unusable once you add the developer. 

When I color very long or very thick/curly hair, I mix up maybe 3-4 batches of hair color while going along . . . you simply add the developer right before you are going to use it --- ALWAYS mixing the hair colors together FIRST, prior to adding developer! You want a fresh batch of color every so-often if you have one of those types of hair.

Hair color oxidizes, which basically means when it hits the oxygen one molecule runs off  and then it will slowly - - pretty much dies off. So,basically, it no longer has the "power" it needs to color the hair. I know many of you do not like to hear this but: the way hair color works, is the result of various chemical reactions which make the hair color 'long-lasting'. But, don't you worry your little heads about those words..... because baking and cooking are just a giant conundrum of chemical reactions and you are putting that IN your body!

Remember : My mission in life currently is to get every last one of you trained properly in hair health & hair coloring techniques. Therefore, if needed or wanted, you can either take care of your own color in a jam, OR you can take over it for fun/hobby. For some reason this past 2 weeks has been riddled with calls inquiring about the need to be able to take care of their own color with Professional results.1/2 were because of health issues by family members and the other half ? desire to join our own Crib Colorist Militia: whose goal it is to become talented home hair colorists (Crib Colorists) and to take up a new hobby!

Boxed Hair Color Kits should be banned from the shelves of every store


Plain and simply:
they are FALSE Advertising

I believe the manufacturers should get in trouble, for false advertising!

My goal is for you, the consumer, to have the proper tools to complete a good head of hair color on your hair -- yourself.
But . . . .
it is now time for the system to be revamped into separating the Tube from Developer. That's what needs to be done - very simple, the manufacturers know it, but they need to know YOU know it.

ALL BOXED HAIR COLOR SHOULD BE TRASHED

Because they do not work correctly except for on a small percentage of consumers and even on those, the results are dismal. Those of us that are Hair Stylists, have known that forever and we never say anything . . . why? Because its “job security”. Every single month of every single year we have a number of new clients sit in our chairs that call with the same story, “ I colored my hair at home with a kit and it is destroyed” can you please fix it???

How ridiculous is that?........so they paid $9.00 for the boxed color and $200.00 to get it fixed minimum ! How silly is that?

The huge multi-million dollar companies that run the hair industry…are just getting bigger and bigger and the true “care” for your hair is being lost. The big companies just don’t care. You know those DOVE “real Women campaigns where they show “bigger” women and their hair…..well DOVE still uses Sulfates in all their shampoos, the ingredient that has been proven over and over to cause hair loss, thinning, in women and men. Why? Because it costs pennies. Like I said they don’t care about hair….not really. They almost had even me tricked, then I read the bottle of their shampoo.

A big blow came to me this past month when I found out the one shampoo that I have had all my clients using for the past couple years…PUREOLOGY, was sold to L’Oreal. There just is no end in sight of this, its so sad to me. I will never buy PUREOLOGY again. 

The new recommendations are Milk Shake, LANZA or SUDZZ Shampoos... the staff put 12 of our shampoos through a month long test (incl. me) > I was looking for the shampoo with the best creamy lather which is what you get with the proper ingredients being used, results came back with those 3 being the Top 3.
 
Now as for the Boxed Hair color Kits I am so livid about…
there is just NO way possible that they can put the proper components in one box. Why?
 
Because when coloring hair -- any good colorist has to have at least the KILLER 15 questions answered first, before coming up with the proper formula. Without those questions answered, there is simply no way you can just throw in a box:1 tube of color and 1 specific 

Developer
and claim that it will work on ALL women that purchase it.
So it is a out and out LIE, false advertising and any other form of perjury you can think of.

How about this scenario . . . .

An African American ...




A Blonde ...


and a Brunette ...
All walk into the store . . . . to buy the hair color of Medium blond in a box....
Which one of those 4 poor unsuspecting consumers is going to have the proper outcome?
Do you think all 4? Hell no, 1............maybe.
 Logically I think most of you can figure that out, that, if they all start with a different hair color...that probably only one of 4 should have a good outcome.
Right?
Yes > Correct.
How in the world.....with one formula in that one little box . . . could all four of them have decent results?

CANNOT
it is
mathematically/ Scientifically/ chemically Impossible
 So 3 of those people will have hair disasters ..and go seeking help from the closest Salon. 
Well, guess what public (that's you) ?? 
The same people that make BOXED COLOR.........own the companies make professional hair color. So that means they have made you a huge customer of theirs by both ruining your hair, then fixing it ! Now, who feels like you have been suckered?




In that Kit box is:

•  1 tube of color…………… 
• 1  bottle of developer………………………

Yet . . . .
In my Color Room alone I have well over 150 Tubes of different Colors to choose from
Developer comes in 6-10 levels (3 Volume, 5 Volume, 6 volume,10 vol, 13Vol., 15 vol.,20 vol. 25 Volume,,30 vol.,40 volume and even 50 Volume)
So if you were to do the math (if I did math well I wouldn’t be doing this). . . How many options does that multiply to be ??

Zillions. most likely
 
The point being... that all those options are necessary in order for the hair color formula to work properly... you or anyone coloring their hair deserves the opportunity to have the proper hair color when the process is complete. Especially if you are selling a product that is supposed to color hair.
When you buy one of those kits, you are opening a box of Color "FAILURE"
You have about a 20% chance to succeed, and I do not find that to be fair to you at all !.

I’ve written about this subject previously, there are a few variables when planning to color your hair that must be taken into account in order to have the proper rich color without any damage. Those variables are NOT taken into account with those damn Hair Color Kits.

When determining the color formula you are going to apply to your hair > a simple fact like: having dry hair that is porous compared to oily hair that is not….can make a huge difference in the formulation. Just knowing that one fact can prevent hair breakage, and make the difference in having shiny hair when the color process is complete compared to having damaged – dull hair.

Do they ask you those questions when you buy a box of color?
Or print that anywhere to be found?
NO NO NO.
I understand now that people need to be able to color their hair at home, for many many reasons. Convenience I have found is even a big one. I never quite understood the concept before when I was in the Salon,
now I get it.


Would many of you consider baking a cake without a recipe?
Or making cookies without any knowledge of how to measure ....or knowing the difference between a Tablespoon and a teaspoon.
Same thing with Coloring your hair.

You will have to do some reading and you may not quite understand a few of the theories but I am trying like Hell to turn Crib Coloring into a HOBBY on its own, like cooking has become. I feel like so many of you.... male and female, would love that to come true..

Mandatory Knowledge, For Screwed Up Hair Color

Far too many people throughout the years have panicked over a botched hair color job and reached for, what I call, "Box-O-Color/crap", and further destroy it. The reason I never wrote this Post before? Most look for me when its too late - but maybe this will help some of you in the future. I will tell you what you should have done BEFORE you applied the box-o-crap.

So there is only 1 disaster instead of 2.........which compounds everything.

Thousands of time since this Blog began 7 years ago, I have received emails/comments/Posts etc...with the sound of Panic in the air, 

"I was trying to color my hair_________,  BUT it turned Blorange, so I panicked - ran to drug store & bought a darker box-o-color/crap..........now what do I do?"

The trick is simple.

In the movie industry we are constantly coloring hair for a daily job on either the actor, stunt person and at times even the Extra's. 

We either wet or shampoo the hair then we grab our little secret magical bottle ............

I'm sure some of you recognize it !

Its Roux Temporary Color Rinse and it comes it 20 shades....its great for temporary uses.
Remember the different color categories?

• Temporary
• Semi-permanent
• Demi-permanent
• Permanent

No one ever talks about temporary, not even me ! ha ha. This is what you should run & get at Sally's and buy in times of hair disasters. ( I can't believe I said that, BUT, it does carry it and Sally's is in every town in our country). So its super convenient and you can get this as easily as Box-O-Color.

Why is this a good choice? You wet the hair, put gloves on ( all color that doesn't use developer is messy ) and apply straight from the bottle. I used to be a Stuntwoman (15 yrs) and I brought my own, because sometimes they would want to color your hair to match the actress I would be doubling and I was already for them with every color in my stunt bag.  They would wet my hair and kind of section and comb section and comb......applying barrier creme around the hairline then after rinsing use a Color Stain Remover around the hairline to clean up any left-over color.

Then you can go to work, school or care for the kids while you CAREFULLY plot your next move on your hair disaster. The color simply shampoos out, yep, all the way out no residue at all - so you have not compounded your original disaster. I would definitely condition with INTENSIVE or THRIVEN following it, it is a teeny bit drying, but hey, what isn't?

So isn't that great? Too bad most people don't look for me until they already put a box of color on.....but maybe I will save someone with this Post !
