Step-by-Step Demo of Hair Color Technique : Ribbons #4

Foil Work and Color Choices in applying Ribbons to Your Hair.
An easy technique applied to your own hair by yourself, I know...I used to do it all the time.

When doing foil work in front of a class we use different color foils for different colors within
the foils.....which I have done here, to make it easier for you to picture. In the

Blue foils = Lightener /bleach & 25 Volume

Pink Foils = Level 4 BRV + 17 Vol.

Orange Foils = Red 6RRV + 20Vol

I always try to use at least 2 - 3 or 4 Levels between each color when you want the color to stand out......the other way if you want it subtle..
This brown circle is the top of the head, I get many comments asking to explain myself in many different methods and ways. So here is another way...
i don't know that you can really see the method to my madness, without this !! Parting is a "key" to Ribbons and Slices

ALSO: whats the main difference between kitchen foil and colorist foils - i mean not weight wise...i guess what i mean reaciton wise do they differ..... alot of ppl are scared to use kitchen foils they say it reacts with the lightener/coloring and can give an organge cast...is this true?

  2. Kristie,
    Cool,
great to hear you were so adventurous . . .you already got a doll head?
are you planning on doing the application to yourself, as well?
I am looking to promote HAIR COLOR as the NEW HOBBY for women of AMERICA.
    what do you all think?
WHY NOT? If they can take up cooking as a hobby . . .why not HAIR COLOR???

Join the Group... you can post the photos of your work in the group --I'd like everyone to see them
    See you over in google.groups.killerstrands

Congratulations and the rest of this series is on its way

  3. BTW kristie . . .
    about the foils>
I don't know about reaction wise - of kitchen foils
i don't want to test them because I don't think they should be used on your own hair
    - period.
Doll head --> OK ( although I would practice with the real thing)
    Your HEAD --> NO WAY

They aren't that expensive you can get a small pack from sallys for
    $2. - $3. :
    YES, they are necessary,
the others will slide and leak

    hope
    that
    helps

  4. Well first let me say i love your blogs and I think there awesome! I work in a hair salon, but I am the nail tech, but in the 10 years i have been doing this I have picked up a little skill:) But what I was wondering on this application is in post one you had the 4BRV with 20 vol. and in post 4you put it with 17 vol and the 66RV in post 1 is with 30 vol. and it post 4 it is 20 vol. and the bleach is with 40 vol. in post 1 and 25 vol. in post 4. So does this make a huge difference in the outcome of the color?

  5. K marlowe,
    Touche,
    you caught me !
    Although it shows my honesty...
The deal with these doll heads is...the hair is treated with something, as much as I call and ask them and try to find them untreated, they just do not exist I have found.
    Maddening.
The formula I gave at the beginning was the one I actually used on the dollhead....the one I gave at the end was the one I would use on real human hair on a real human being.
the doll heads need extra punch to get it do what I want
    That's the difference.

    I go for perfection.

There is no reason to add that extra punch to real human hair.

I need to list the colors & developers as pertain to human hair , so I am going to change it right now!
thank you for the keen eye!

  6. Kc your blog is fabulous, thank you for separating the hype from the reality (chemistry!)

I'm a v=5.5, I=7-9, d=7/8/9. I have studied your posts and I was using the ribbons method as part of my plan.

If I were to do this again, I would limit myself to 3 ribbons, until I had the technique down. I was going for 13, and the oil bleach leaked from my (colored but not embossed, oops!) foils onto the roots--which processed way faster. I was almost about to freak, but I remembered reading about your other techniques, both the full bleach out and the pirrouette. So KC to the rescue, I took out the foils once I saw that certain spots were going yellow white, washed out the bleach and basically reapplied on the whole veil section wherever I still had some orange or strands that got spotted. I completely followed the prep and post treatment suggestions.

Now that I've toned I'm quite happy with the results, lots of light and it looks natural not banana or blorange, thanks to your lessons KC! I'm a pretty 7-9-10. I may continue bleaching new growth at the veil and adding ribbons of 8, so many options--but I can see that keeping it healthy will make it look better than any color change would. You rock!

Sorry long comment, really just wanted to suggest any newbies to doing foil work on yourself (like me) try just 2-3 at first :)

  7. What is the difference between slices and ribbons?

  8. Slices = color is placed at base of hair, Ribbons its more of a free- for- all....... lightly placing foils around the head on the lengths is the color, to give it more of a child-like color affect.!
